    ‘Garage-Door Guy’ caught in 2011 ‘Dateline NBC’ sting

    The “Garage-Door Guy” who stiffed Arizona homeowners on unfinished jobs, admitted he was also “The Dateline Guy” caught ripping off customers in a 2011 hidden-camera sting.

    Richard Killingsworth said he was profiled in a “Dateline NBC” investigation into garage-door repair scams.

    “That was a completely different situation,” Killingsworth told The Arizona Republic. “We were setup by them. … It has haunted me for a long time.”

    Setup is the point of hidden-camera stings. In this case, Dateline host Chris Hansen had Phoenix garage-door companies respond to a home with a new garage door and opener rigged to appear broken.

    One after another, service companies called by the homeowner assessed the problems as minor, most charging no more than the cost of a service call. Until Killingsworth showed up.

    In the video, Killingsworth attempts to charge the homeowner $527 for what Hansen called “a perfectly working garage-door opener that’s less than a week old.”

    “You should be busy out finding pedophiles rather than doing this,” Killingsworth told Hansen before driving off.

    Video surfaces after investigation

    The video surfaced after The Republic’s Call for Action team reported June 6 that Killingsworth took thousands of dollars from customers for botched and unfinished jobs.

    Neither Killingsworth nor his company, ATR Garage Doors, are licensed in Arizona, an apparent violation of state law. 

    That didn’t stop him from charging two Surprise residents for garage doors he never delivered…
